Former Costume Designer David Ochoa hung up his patterns and brought out his inner sculptor to embark on his next venture when the pandemic hit. The result is Davie Ocho Candle Co., a custom collection of great-looking scented, sculptural candles.
Davie Ocho Sculptural Candles
David Ochoa began sculpting one-of-a-kind molds in his Venice Beach bungalow in 2020, resulting in retro shapes and objects with, as he so aptly puts it, a distinctly Californian vibe.

The collection consists of architectural and geometric candles in varying sizes as well as novelty candles that are a throwback to the 70s and 80s. All of them are uniquely decorative pieces made with a soyblend.
The candles come in a terrific palette of attractive colors. And each comes in several colorways, some with splatter paint. I couldn’t find a mention or choice of fragrance when buying a candle on his site but his “about” page on the site says “Fragrance is key – with best-sellers including sunset cannabis, Indian sandalwood and santal coconut.”

The very Hèrmes-like Pony candle, the Dolly boot candle, the Nike Mid-top Sneaker candle and other niche figuratives are sure to find their respective audiences, while the Glow, Bubble and other geometric shapes would be at home in any contemporary interior.

Some of the candles are imbued with a sense of humor and are shaped like iconic retro objects such as Lips, Pills, Boom Boxes and Sneakers.

The majority of the collection are on the large side, and therefore costly, but that didn’t stop the hipper stores from carrying his candles. Quite the opposite, stockists include Fred Segal, MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art), FRWD, Super Simple and Wellground. The Davie Ocho Candle Co. sells their candles online as well. Prices range from $22 to $175.
